The JPRC team organized and moderated a roundtable at the 2024 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology, in San Francisco, on November 15th. The roundtable, entitled Regression Discontinuity Design in shaping future justice policy, focused on the strengths and challenges of the design, drawing from examples in the field.

Shaun Ali, Senior Justice Technical Assistance Specialist at WestEd, presented with violence prevention experts at the 2024 Eradicate Hate Global Summit held October 21–24, 2024, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Eradicate Hate Global Summit is the most comprehensive anti-hate conference in the world with an audience of roughly 1,500 thought leaders across a wide range of sectors. The Summit provided a unique, multidisciplinary forum to share ideas and build working relationships to drive the development and deployment of effective approaches to reduce hate-fueled violence.

JPRC team meets with the PA Lt. Governor and violence prevention leaders

The JPRC’s violence prevention team visited Harrisburg, PA, on March 19th, 2024. The purpose of the meeting was to brief the Lt. Governor, Austin David, and convene leaders from five projects across Pennsylvania that have received multi-million dollar investments from the state through their “Coordinated Community Violence Intervention” (CCVI) grant.

Shaun Ali presents at the Ohio Crime Prevention Association annual conference

Shaun Ali, Senior Justice Technical Assistance Specialist, presented at the Ohio Crime Prevention Association annual conference. Shaun’s session, Humanizing Violence Prevention: Understanding the People We Serve, discussed the different levels of prevention as detailed in the Socio-Ecological Model—individual, relationship, community, society—and the various roles people play, whether in law enforcement or other system agencies, in community-based organizations, as TA providers, or in other roles. Emphasizing a human-centered approach, Shaun shared his personal background to encourage attendees to reflect on their motivations and how these shape their work in violence prevention. Shaun’s presentation is part of a growing portfolio of JPRC projects in violence prevention.

Gun violence impacts families, first responders, and communities in profound and lasting ways. In 2023, more than 18,000 persons died by homicide in the United States. And on June 26th, 2024, the U.S. Surgeon General declared gun violence a public health crisis.
