The second annual National Research Conference for the Prevention of Firearm Related Harms was held in Chicago, in November 2023. The conference brings together many research, policy, and practice leaders in preventing gun violence. Senior Researcher Trevor Fronius presented a paper entitled, “The impact of Massachusetts’ Safe and Successful Youth Initiative (SSYI) on reducing urban gun violence.” This presentation detailed the history and findings from our decade long research partnership, led by the American Institutes for Research and funded by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services, to study the Commonwealth’s statewide strategy for community gun violence prevention. The presentation covered the persistent positive individual, community, and economic impacts of SSYI, and concluded with implications and recommendations for future work in this area.
