In September 2015, WestEd’s Evaluation Research Program (Atlanta office) under the direction of Dr. Joseph McCrary, received a 5-year grant from NIJ to support the implementation and rigorous testing of a comprehensive school safety framework in the Atlanta Public Schools (APS). This project will be conducted in partnership with APS and Georgia State University. This project is designed to create and implement an integrated model of these safety, climate and child development efforts in the APS. The evaluation will include a continuous improvement cycle and rigorous experimental and quasi-experimental tests of different components.
The study partners recently held a press conference to sign a cooperative agreement. During the press conference, they fielded media questions to build public knowledge about the project and increase transparency. The event was covered by a number of local media outlets.
One of the purposes of the grant program is to identify solutions to help other school districts provide safer and more supportive learning environments for their students. The research team of WestEd and Georgia State University will rigorously evaluate and then disseminate that knowledge nationwide. The project officially launches in January 2016 and concludes in December 2021.
